Conundrum in University of Lagos Elections
Elections in the University of Lagos took place on Wednesday 9th October. The day started with the aspirants and their supporters moving from lecture theaters and hostels to find or convince people to vote for them. The voting period was scheduled to hold from 9:00am to 2:00pm but from around 10am the students portal became extremely slow, this continued till 12pm after which the website went down and started returning error messages. The deadline for voting was later extended till 4:30pm so that the error could be rectified. It was later rectified but it was so slow to the extent that some aspiring candidates where unable to vote and not even one student in the department of Mass Communication was able to vote in their faculty elections. For these reasons the elections have been regarded as unfair by some students.
It has been confirmed that this is the norm in the University on occasions such as balloting for bed space and voting. The server is always extremely slow and students are able to get bed spaces only by luck and connections.
What makes this years election different is the decision of students to write petition letters to the DSA(Dean of Student Affairs) concerning the matter. The DSA stated that if more petition letters are written than the total number of students that voted then the elections would be conducted again.
If you are a student of the University of Lagos and you want to contribute this, movement you can do so by writing a petition letter. You can follow the format below, print and submit at the DSA’s office
